RESTORATION OF A VICTORIAN GLASSHOUSE

A Lottery funded project was launched to restore a former Victorian glasshouse and its surrounding gardens on a Shropshire estate.

The glasshouse had been left to the elements for decades and required major conservation works to return it to its original condition. Shrubs had taken over the structure, damaging the supporting brick walls; the metal frame had become severely rusted; and glass panes had discoloured, broken or disappeared completely.

Work began clearing the trees and shrubbery that had overgrown the structure. The tiny glass panes that covered the curved roof were salvaged, and cleaned by volunteers, and the impressive iron frame was meticulously sand-blasted and re-painted. The brick walls at the front and back of the glasshouse were repaired and re-pointed and the section of wall above the frames was rebuilt to match in with the old brickwork.
